russisch Jẹlgawa, Elgava ['jɛ-], früher deutsch Mitau, Stadt in Lettland, an der Kurländischen Aa, 72 300 Einwohner; Landwirtschaftshochschule; Kleinbus-, Landmaschinenwerk, Maschinenbau, Zuckerfabrik, Konservenindustrie; internationaler Flughafen.
 
 
Barockes Schloss Jelgava (1738-40 und 1763-72; Dreiflügelanlage), Schloss Valdekas (Ende 19. Jahrhundert), Villa Medem (1818), barock-klassizistische Academia Petrina (1773-75; heute Kunst- und auch Geschichtsmuseum), evangelische Annenkirche (1619-41; Altarbild von J. Rozentāls).
 
 
Neben der 1265 erbauten Ordensburg entstand eine Siedlung, die um 1580 Stadtrecht erhielt. 1561-1795 war Jelgava Residenz der Herzöge von Kurland und kam 1795 an Russland (bis 1915 Sitz des Gouverneuren der russischen Provinz Kurland); 1915-19 von deutschen Truppen besetzt. 1918-40 war Jelgava Hauptstadt der lettische Provinz Semgallen (lettisch Zemgale).
